BIG WIN: National Popular Vote Loses Key House Vote

Yesterday started with a bang when I joined House and Senate Republican leaders in Augusta for a press conference to rail against the National Popular Vote as “a betrayal against the Maine people.”

Click the image above to watch the full press conference.

As you may recall, this bill by Democrat Senate President Troy Jackson seeks to bind Maine’s 4 Electoral College votes for U.S. President to the so-called “National Popular Vote.”

NPV would strip Maine people of our voice, giving away our electoral power as a small, rural state to big cities like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

That’s why the Free Maine Campaign has spent the last several months urging you to take action and make your voice heard in Augusta.

And that’s why I personally traveled to Augusta last month and delivered THOUSANDS of your petitions against National Popular Vote to your legislators and Governor Janet Mills.

Because so many of you took action by sending petitions, emails and phone calls to your state legislators, something shocking took place in Augusta yesterday afternoon.

Twenty House Democrats broke party ranks to vote with House Republicans.

As a result, National Popular Vote went down in flames on this key early vote by a margin of 76-66.

(See the full roll call vote at the bottom of this email.)

This big victory yesterday would have never happened without your help — so thank you to everyone who called, emailed and signed their petitions!

But its premature to declare the National Popular Vote completely and totally dead.

We won a decisive and important victory yesterday…

…But bad bills in Augusta have a tendency to rise from the dead and strike again.

We can’t celebrate until we’ve truly driven the stake through the heart of this National Popular Vote scheme.

Now that the House has rejected NPV on an initial vote, the bill goes back to the Senate where another vote will take place this Monday.

If you recall, the State Senate previously voted to pass NPV by a vote of 19 to 16.

When NPV arrives back in their chambers, each Senator will have the choice to (1) “Insist” on their previous action, or to (2) “Recede and Concur” with the House:

  • If the Senate votes to “Recede and Concur,” then that’s it: NPV will be completely and totally dead.

  • But, if the Senate votes to “Insist,” then NPV goes back to the House for another vote, which means NPV advocates get another bite at the apple and a chance to flip votes and pass this terrible legislation into law.

In that case, the House must vote to “Insist” to kill NPV once and for all.

So here’s two actions you can take TODAY to put the final nails in the coffin of National Popular Vote:

Action 1: Call or Email your State Senator

If your State Senator voted “No” on National Popular Vote:

  1. Please tell them, “Thank you for voting to Save Maine’s Voice.”
  2. Ask them to “Vote to Recede and Concur on LD 816” in the Senate on Monday.

If your State Senator voted “Yes” on National Popular Vote:

  1. Please tell them, “I’m disappointed with your vote to strip Maine people of our electoral voice.”
  2. Ask them to “Vote to Recede and Concur on LD 816” in the Senate on Monday.

Action 2: Call or Email your State Representative

If your State Representative voted “No” on National Popular Vote:

  1. Please tell them, “Thank you for voting to Save Maine’s Voice.”
  2. Ask them to “Vote to Insist on LD 816,” if it comes back to the Maine House.

If your State Representative voted “Yes” on National Popular Vote:

  1. Please tell them, “I’m disappointed with your vote to strip Maine people of our electoral voice.”
  2. Ask them to redeem themselves and “Vote to Insist on LD 816,” if is comes back to the Maine House.
