Networking in 4 Easy Steps

Networking events can often be nerve-wracking, especially for those just stepping into the professional world or exploring new career opportunities. Never fear! With the right approach, these gatherings can be a goldmine of opportunities. Here are some valuable tips to ace your networking game and make meaningful connections that can propel your career forward.

Strength in Numbers

Whether a coworker, a friend, or a neighbor who works in a professional field, bringing a familiar face along is a great strategy to help you feel more at ease walking into the room.  Just be sure that your support person doesn't keep you from mingling with others (which is the whole reason you're there).

Split up, meet a couple of new people, check in with your buddy, repeat. Remember, the goal is to expand your network, so remain approachable and open to new connections.

Shake Hands with Everyone

A simple gesture like a handshake (or an elbow bump) can set the tone for a positive interaction. When attending an event solo, approach the registration table with confidence and don't hesitate to share that it's your first time. Organizers are usually helpful and can introduce you to others.

Throughout the event, be friendly and welcoming to everyone you encounter. If you have a specific networking goal, let others know! Mention your interests, and be open to the advice and recommendations of those you meet. Utilize the power of mutual connections by asking your new contacts to help you meet the right people.

Be Open to the Possibilities

Approaching these events with an open mind can yield unexpected opportunities. Take a deep breath, put on a friendly face, and engage with as many people as possible. Kick off the conversation with something unimportant - comment on how great the venue is, ask what time the event will wrap up, comment on the food, etc.  Then introduce yourself with confidence and embrace the idea that each person you meet might have valuable insights or connections that could significantly benefit your career.

And never underestimate the power of a diverse network. Engage with individuals that you wouldn't normally spend time with - these conversations can offer fresh perspectives and insights that may prove invaluable in the future.

Follow Up

Don't forget to have your business cards (digital or printed) ready to share, along with an efficient way to keep up with others' contact info. After the event, follow up with a brief call or email. Even if you didn't get much from the initial conversation, it never hurts to meet up later, either at the next networking event or for a more in-depth opportunity to learn more about each other.

The more you practice your networking skills, the easier it will be! If you do it right, networking events can provide a platform for career growth and new professional relationships. Embrace the experience and remember, every handshake might just be the beginning of a promising career journey.

Workplace culture is at the forefront of conversations about employee recruitment and retention.  It's not about hosting social gatherings and providing fun perks. It's about the well-being of the people you rely on for business success.

Creating a strong and positive company culture takes practice and strategy. You may have a diverse team, but are they truly included in goal-setting and decision-making? Are there reasonable accommodations in place for those with learning and physical disabilities? Do policies and procedures consider differences in work styles and home life?

Here are a few resources to support your journey to a powerful, diverse, and inclusive workplace culture.

Inclusive Hiring Practices
Inclusive recruitment guarantees the widest variety of staff and the best possible choice of candidates. In fact, diversity of employees, especially at higher levels, is one of the best possible indicators of both long-term growth and overall innovation, with more diverse management teams tending to far outperform less-diverse competitors. Take a look at a few Strategies for Inclusive Hiring and contact us for guidance specific to your own business.

Mental Wellness in the Workplace
While employees are more productive now than ever before, many also have intense feelings of loneliness, depression, seasonal depression, anxiety and substance use challenges. These issues can impact team communication, workflow, turnover and, ultimately, your bottom line.

Create Change - make an impact with strategies for fostering a happy, healthy work environment.

Mental Health First Aid Training - an interactive 12-hour course that presents an overview of mental illness and substance use disorders in the U.S. and introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of their impact, and overviews common treatments.

National Mental Health Alliance / NAMI Piedmont Tri-County - with a mission of improving the quality of life and treatment for those who live with mental health conditions and their family members through education, support, and advocacy, our regional chapter of NAMI can help employers and individual with the resources needed to improve mental wellness in the workplace.

Access and Accommodation
Qualified workers with disabilities add value to the workforce and are often discounted due to misconceptions about needed accommodations. Job accommodations are often not as significant as many believe, but play a vital role in creating inclusive workplaces, advancing the goals of the ADA, and increasing employment opportunities for people with disabilities.  Find out more at the Job Accommodation Network.

Celebrating Black Business Month: Empowering Entrepreneurs and Communities

Summary:  Black Business Month celebrates the achievements of African-American entrepreneurs, showcasing their contributions across various sectors. By supporting black-owned businesses, individuals foster economic growth within local communities, creating job opportunities and circulating wealth. Beyond financial backing, participating in this observance prompts essential conversations about the value of diversity in business. The event serves as a platform for spreading awareness and advocating for equal representation. In essence, Black Business Month represents a collective commitment to empowerment, inclusivity, and economic progress, spotlighting the importance of supporting minority-owned businesses year-round.

August 1st marks the commencement of a significant and inspiring observance: Black Business Month. This annual event shines a spotlight on the remarkable achievements and innovations of African-American entrepreneurs. In a world where diversity and representation are talked about more than ever in the workplace, Black Business Month provides a platform to celebrate, support, and uplift black-owned businesses that have historically been underrepresented.

As we embark on this celebratory month, let's explore the reasons why embracing and promoting black-owned businesses is not only beneficial for entrepreneurs but also contributes to the growth of local economies and the promotion of diversity.

Celebrates Black Businesses & Entrepreneurs

Black Business Month stands as a testament to the hard work, perseverance, and creativity of Black entrepreneurs. It is an occasion to showcase their remarkable achievements and acknowledge their invaluable contributions to the economy. From innovative tech startups to cherished family-run restaurants, black-owned businesses have left an indelible mark on various industries. By taking a moment to honor these entrepreneurs, we not only validate their efforts but also inspire the next generation of aspiring business leaders from all walks of life.

Supports Economic Growth in the Black Community

Every purchase from a black-owned business is an investment in the economic prosperity of the Black community. When consumers choose to support these businesses, they contribute to the circulation of wealth within local neighborhoods. This, in turn, helps foster economic growth, generate job opportunities, and enhance the overall well-being of the community. The power of consumer choice is undeniable – by consciously selecting products and services offered by black-owned businesses, individuals play an active role in creating a more equitable and inclusive society.

Educates Others on the Importance of Diversity

Participating in Black Business Month goes beyond mere economic support; it's an opportunity to stand in solidarity with the Black community and advocate for diversity. By embracing the celebration, we initiate crucial conversations about the significance of uplifting minority-owned businesses. As the spotlight shines on these entrepreneurs, it serves as a catalyst for promoting dialogue about the advantages of diverse representation within the business world. Black Business Month thus becomes a vehicle for spreading awareness and driving change that extends far beyond the month of August.

Black Business Month represents more than just a 31-day observance; it symbolizes a collective commitment to empowerment, inclusivity, and economic progress. By celebrating the achievements of black entrepreneurs, supporting local communities, and fostering meaningful conversations about diversity, we pave the way for a brighter, more equitable future. As we navigate through this month of celebration, let us remember that our choices as consumers and advocates have the potential to shape a world where every business, regardless of its owner's background, has an equal opportunity to thrive and succeed.

In the US, Cinco de Mayo has become a huge celebration. It's also an opportunity to show support for the Mexican community, including Mexican-owned businesses. Here are some ways that you can bring the celebration to your own workplace:

  • Offer themed specials to your customers throughout the week.
  • Highlight your own product offerings that are sourced from Mexican-owned businesses.
  • Partner with local Mexican-owned businesses to create joint promotions and show solidarity.
  • Host a Cinco de Mayo breakfast/lunch/dinner or even a social for your staff that highlights the food and culture of Mexico – be sure to have a locally-owned Mexican restaurant do the catering for you!
  • Create social media content that showcases and celebrates Mexican-owned businesses, and encourage your followers to support them.

By celebrating Cinco de Mayo in this way, we can not only support Mexican-owned businesses on this special day, we can also expand our business network and build relationships year-round outside of our usual suppliers and clients.

Communication

Communication is key to cultivating a diverse workforce. Here are a few mindful practices that will help improve team success:

1) Avoid interrupting or moving the conversation too fast. Let others finish a full thought without assuming you know what they're about to say and take time to explore new ideas.

2) Give your full attention and avoid distractions. People are less likely to share ideas and experiences if they sense disinterest.

3) Listen and watch for the full picture, not just facts and answers. Inspiration and intuition is in the details. Exploring the less obvious elements of an idea or conversation and asking related questions could lead to real progress.

4) Ask questions to find out how a team member's unique knowledge and perspective shapes their thinking. When you truly "consider the source", what might seem like a random or unrelated comment might just be the breakthrough you've been looking for.

5) Repeat what you think you heard - this helps clarify and get everyone on the same page. We all misunderstand sometimes and that can lead to some major challenges. Repeating your version of the conversation can easily clear things up and help the team move forward.

Become an Inclusive Leader in the New Year

January 5, 2023

Inclusive Leadership image

The events precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, now known as the "Great Resignation" have shone a new light on the role of leadership in business. It is now clear that millions of people across the nation are looking more closely at how they feel in their workplace.  This includes the quality of relationships with supervisors and coworkers, the potential for new opportunities, and their general level of contentment. We know that this impacts our members, especially those who employ small, tightly-knit teams.

So, how do we work on keeping our teams together, retaining the skills and knowledge that each individual brings? Part of the solution could be inclusive leadership.

What is Inclusive Leadership?

Inclusive leadership is where leaders ensure that all their team members:

  • Feel a sense of value and belonging
  • Are treated fairly and equitably
  • Are provided with the resources they need to thrive and succeed

An inclusive leader will be aware of their biases and will seek out other perspectives different from their own to inform decisions and allow closer collaboration. However, there must be a real commitment to the process, or employees will quickly become disengaged.

Fostering an Inclusive Culture

The first step to fostering an inclusive culture is trust. Managers and business owners need to trust that their team members have the skills to do their jobs and create successful outcomes. Avoiding micromanagement is crucial here - continually checking up on employees erodes trust quickly.

The next step is empowerment, allowing your employees to work on new projects that build their skillset and enable them to explore their potential. Having a good knowledge of your team's skills will allow you to put people together with complementary skills.

3 Traits of an Inclusive Leader

If you don't have them already, incorporating these three traits into your leadership approach is vital to developing inclusive leadership.

Integrity
To make a difference as an inclusive leader, you need to display absolute integrity and be aligned with your organization's core beliefs and values.

Influence
Managing performance is more than simply checking up on your staff to ensure they're doing their jobs properly. Instead, inclusive leaders use coaching and focused training initiatives to influence their teams and bring out the best in them.

Impact
A vital part of an inclusive leader's task is ensuring that everyone is working toward the organization's overall strategic plan. They accomplish this by ensuring that the entire team is focused and working together to achieve the outcomes outlined in that plan.

Bringing the Generations Together

A significant challenge for the inclusive leader is bringing together the working ethics of different age groups within the workplace. For example, those from the baby boomer generation generally have tendencies to prefer working within strictly structured systems, Millenials and Gen Z want to find value in their work and prefer more flexible approaches, while Gen Xers are happy somewhere in between. The best inclusive leaders can listen to all groups and tie their strengths together.

In Conclusion

The greatest strengths of the inclusive leader are listening, strategizing and organizing. If you can listen to and learn something from each of your employees, you can better strategize and organize to have everyone working together in a harmonious team. With these approaches, productivity and employee retention will naturally improve.

Resolve to Take Small Steps for a Big Change in the New Year

Building a positive workplace culture results in happier employees, which in turn, increases your productivity rates, decreases staff turnover, supports goal achievement, and ultimately impacts your bottom line. Basically, a happy workplace is good for everyone! The question is, how can you create a positive, supporting workplace culture quickly. Check out these tips to get started.

Design an Open Floor Plan (or open and casual meeting spaces)

Having a large, open floor plan or creative places where employees can gather. lets your staff communicate with each other more easily. This leads to stronger team bonds and work friendships — and that alone can make your employees happy.

While work shouldn't be all about socializing, it is an important part of making your employees happy, and happier employees get more work done.

Our chamber's Sr. VP, Colleen Dick, shared that "We weren't sure that our staff would use our unstructured work spaces but, once they were encouraged to step out from behind their desks something kind of fun happened. Random social conversations accidentally became impromptu planning meetings and brainstorming sessions and the energy around our work increased noticeably. The change was almost immediate."

Look for New Hires That Fit In

To create a positive work culture, your employees need to get along. So it's important for hiring managers to look for qualities in job applicants that would help them fit in at your company. For example, if most of your employees are the more casual, chatty type, you don't want to hire someone who seems tightly wound. If you did, he or she would have a hard time working with and building relationships with your current employees. It might take you a bit longer to find someone to fill a job that will be a good fit, but finding someone who "gets" your company's culture is worth the wait.

Be Approachable

You might tell your employees that you have an open-door policy, but do you really make them feel comfortable approaching you? Take a few minutes each day to interact with your employees. Listen to their ideas, and help them solve problems they're having. When you show genuine interest in your employees, they know that you care about them and appreciate the work they do — and they'll be a lot more comfortable entering your office to have a chat when needed. Also, say "hi" to people you pass in the hallways and smile frequently — it's important for the boss to lead the way and small gestures like this show your employees that you're happy and they should be too.

Have Some Fun

Don't be afraid to let loose once in awhile. It's good to have some fun with your employees. It shows them that you're just a regular person, not someone who's powerful and scary. Host company-wide events such as a family picnic or an office holiday party. You can also host team-building events for each team. Simply choose fun activities that require team members to work together such as a trip to the nearest escape room facility.

Recognize Accomplishments

Set reachable goals for your employees each month an give recognition awards to employees who meet or exceed their goals. Alternatively, start an Employee of the Month program and let your employees nominate their co-workers for the award. Also, when an employee reaches a small milestone, be sure to let them know that they did a great job.

Creating a positive work environment doesn't have to be difficult. The key to success is getting your employees to bond and interact with each other and ensure they feel valued and supported.

Happy Inclusive Schools Week! Started in 2001, this week-long awareness effort aims to acknowledge and celebrate the work that parents, teachers, and volunteers do to improve the quality of education for all students.

5 Facts About Inclusive Education That May Surprise You

  1. No one-size fits-all
Due to the varying nature of disabilities and preferences of students, there is no one approach to education that works for every student or even the majority of students.

  1. Inclusive education promotes social cohesion
Inclusive education forms a foundation that helps improve kids’ communication and tolerance for marginalized groups.

  2. It’s about equal access
Inclusivity is about providing access to information, opportunities, and spaces to everyone and ensuring that the access benefits everyone as well.

  3. Inclusivity is built by everyone
Everyone’s actions matter when it comes to building an inclusive society.

  4. Inclusive education can solve the unemployment crises
Many people from marginalized groups find it difficult to gain employment because of discrimination, but inclusive schooling can provide better opportunities for everyone and help solve unemployment crises.

Join us in paying tribute to all who contribute to education and to the success of our future workforce and read more about this important campaign at this link.
